IODINE TO THE RESCUE

By

Frank Nuber

Sometimes you have those hard situations when your client is doing everything you ask and following directions, and she is not responding to therapy and all the tests show the levels are in balance, and you ask what is going on. A year ago one of those cases caused me to lose a lot of sleep pondering what I might be missing that would make all the difference for this patient, she is exercising, fixing her diet, and reducing stress and apply her hormones but it just isn’t working. I checked with a colleague with whom I frequently share problems with from Canada and he asked me if I had checked the patient’s Iodine level. Of course, it hit me like lightening, Iodine is essential trace element required for hormone synthesis and it is so overlooked these days. Not surprisingly that patient was Iodine deficient, was supplemented with non prescription supplement and miraculously recovered in less than 2 months.

IODINE TO THE RESCUE!

Discovered by Frenchman; Bernard Courtois in 1804. The name originates from the Greek word “iodes” which means violet. Iodine  deficiency is believed to be widespread throughout the world.

All cells in the body need iodine for proper functioning. All glands (thyroid, adrenal, etc.) especially need iodine for the production of hormones. Many believe iodine deficiency is a major cause of breast cancer and other diseases of the reproductive organs such as ovarian, uterus and prostrate cysts and cancers. Mainline Japanese population consume 13.8mg of Iodine per day, and Japanese women have one of the lowest breast cancer rates in the world, their diet includes large quantities of seaweed. Iodine levels in US soil have fallen 50 per cent over the past 50 years and soil in the US is deficient in iodine. The Great Lakes region has some of lowest soil iodine levels in the world and as a result, high levels of cancers related to iodine deficiency. I know of a physician in Madison Wisconsin who has been quite successful in treating fibrocystic breast disease (cysts in the breast) with iodide/iodine supplementation. In one case a 37 year-old woman with severe fibrocystic breast disease was completely cured after supplementing with 50 mgs of iodine a day for two months. Women with larger breasts need more iodine than women with smaller breasts. Other medical authorities agree that iodine deficiency can lead to fibrocystic breast disease and/or ovarian cysts.

Iodine can similarly reduce uterine fibroids and one of the first conventional medical treatments for severe fibroids was to paint the uterus with iodine.

Some other medical conditions associated with iodine deficiency are goiters, Graves Disease, Hashimotos Disease, fatigue and impaired immune system function. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy can lead to miscarriages and reduced IQ in surviving offspring.

The World Health Organization says that iodine deficiency is the largest single cause of mental retardation. Iodine also detoxifies the body by removing mercury, fluorides, chlorides, and bromides.

If iodine/iodide are so crucial in the body, why hasn’t there been more research studies published, I believe that because iodine cannot be patented there is no incentive for the drug companies to perform the research. Iodized salt and the iodine supplements usually found in health food stores contain the iodide form of iodine. There has been little success treating patients with only iodide. It seems the conventional medical establishment again has grossly underestimated the amount of a nutrient needed for good health. According to Dr. G. E. Abraham, “Of all the elements known so far to be essential for health, iodine is the most misunderstood and the most feared. Yet, it is by far the safest of all the trace elements known to be essential for human health. It is the only trace element that can be ingested safely in amounts up to 100,000 times the RDA. For example, potassium iodide has been prescribed safely to pulmonary patients in daily amounts of up to 6.0 gm/day, in large groups of such patients for several years. It is important however to emphasize that this safety record only applies to inorganic nonradioactive iodine/iodide, not to organic iodine-containing drugs and to radioiodides.”

Seafood and sea plants such as kelp (seaweed) are good dietary sources of iodine but few people in the US consume enough of these foods.

Summary of established conditions responsive to iodine supplementation: Fibrocystic breasts, Polycystic Ovarian syndrome, Hypothyroid, hyperthyroid, cognitive dysfunction (brain fog), Diabetes, heart rhythm problems including Atrial Fib, and Breast Cancer Prevention. Iodine is depleted by: fluoride, chlorine, bromine, thyroid hormone, pesticides.

We now do routine testing for iodine deficiency. When you are unresponsive to your hormone therapy you just might have an iodine deficiency. If you have questions, give me a call, my job is helping women restore their lives.

Migraine Headaches

Do You Suffer With Menstrual Migraines?

By Frank J Nuber, Pharmacist

Migraines are serious headaches, most often occurring only on one side of the head, and often preceded by a vague sense (AURA) that the sufferer learns to recognize as an impending headache.

Migraines afflict approximately 21 million women in the United States-three times more than men. So it makes sense that women’s migraines may be related to hormonal levels, which normally occur right before your period starts. This hormone-related migraine is often referred to as a Menstrual Migraine. Menstrual migraines have been reported to be more severe than regular migraines, may persist longer and may occur more frequently.

Migraines vary in severity and sometimes becoming almost unendurable without medication, and can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Routine conventional medical treatment involves prescription medications that have serious side effects of muscle pains, numbness, and tingling in the fingers and toes, rapid or slowed heart rate, and nausea and vomiting. Not medications to take lightly. Migraine victims live in fear of their next headache. And it is possible that the treatment is worse than the headache. Medical science has not been very helpful, centering treatment on the symptoms rather than the root cause.

It makes sense to me that if it is a menstrual headache we might want to look at the hormonal cyclic rhythm for the cause and treatment and fix the problem instead of covering it up. When migraine headaches occur with regularity in women only at premenstrual times, they are most likely due to estrogen dominance. These are the Fortunate Patients. I have many letters in my files from women whose premenstrual migraines have been dramatically improved or cured with the use of hormone balance with progesterone cream. This is because estrogen causes dilation of blood vessels, and thus contributes to the cause(s) of migraines. One of the many virtues of natural progesterone is it helps restore normal vascular tone, counteracting the blood vessel dilation that causes the headache.

Molly is a 30 year old and has suffered from headaches for 15 years, ever since she began menstruating. Molly reported having a headache virtually every day of her life. Associated with her daily headaches are the twice monthly migraine headaches. Molly tried numerous prescription medications without relief. Molly claimed “I don’t really know what it is like to go through a whole day without a headache,” she also complained that “I get every cold that comes around. She was constantly sick. After doing a saliva hormone test we found Molly to be estrogen dominant and we began topical progesterone therapy with the approval of her doctor. Within the first month her headaches decreased by 50% and she began to live life headache free. After six months she had an occasional headache but has had no migraines for the past 2 months after that. Molly still remembers how she felt when she had a migraine, her head felt like it was going to explode, couldn’t stand light and got very nauseous, and couldn’t function, just lie in bed until it would pass, sometimes for 2-3 days. Today she has been virtually migraine free for the past two years and without serious side effects.

Is it a miracle? No, just a common sense approach to this malady which can affect so many women. Compounding pharmacists all over this country are doing the very same thing and millions of women are being helped. Molly cries when she thinks of the years of suffering needlessly, when help was there all the time.

Do you suffer with menstrual migraines? Give me a call to discuss your options, it may benefit you greatly.
